Archibald Montgomery and Martha Campbell
Family Group Sheet

From the internet, I found this site from Scott and Kathryn (Leedom) Ives Genealogy http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ski/genealogy.html

Archibald Montgomery (216) was born in County Antrim, Ireland, a son of Archibald Montgomery (709). In 1767, he married Martha Campbell (217), a daughter of Hugh Campbell (220) and Elizabeth Buchanan (221). It is said that Elizabeth came from the same Buchanan line that produced President James Buchanan.

Archibald and Martha together had seven children: Archibald (703), born about 1769; John (704), born in 1775, married Annie Muse (748); Joseph (705); Martha (706), married a Caldwell; William (707); James (212), born in 1780, married Sarah Fulton (213); and Charles (708), born in 1789, married Elizabeth Custard (747).

Archibald was a Private in the Revolutionary War, serving in the 7th Battalion, Salsbury Township, Lancaster County, PA. It is said that Archibald owned extensive property near Philadelphia. Archibald and his family later moved west.

The first census of the United States in 1790 shows an Archibald Montgomery living in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, PA with seven free white males under 16 and one free white female.

Archibald died in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on 26 November 1791 and is buried in Westmoreland County.

After Archibald's death, James and three of his brothers, John, Joseph and William went to Allegheny County, which from 1790 until 1800 extended almost to Lake Erie. James found land along Sandy Creek in Irwin Township. This area later became part of Mercer County. James's mother, Martha, and two younger brothers, Charles and Archibald and sister, Martha, joined him once the land was acquired. Martha was a weaver and was able to get some work to help support the family. Charles became a miller and was also able to help support the family by grinding grain for others.

When Martha died and where she is buried is unknown.

Another site from Timothy D. Evans states this:

William Montgomery (707) was born in 1753 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He is a son of Archibald Montgomery (216) and Martha Campbell (217).

It is not known who William married, but he had at least one son, Archibald (1360), born 22 Jan 1817 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

He learned milling at an early age, which he practiced along with farming. About 1842, William and his family moved west to Iowa. He was a great hunter and kept the family supplied with meat. He was the first Justice of the Peace in Delaware County. He was an influential citizen and a member of the United Presbyterian Church. William died about 1856 in Iowa.
