Susan Josephine Lenagh / Susie Leaneagh

UPDATED Feb 2008. Not a lot is known about this youngest sister of George, Jesse, Frank, Marie and Ben, but a new batch of cousins has found my website and have given me new information, see below. If anyone has any other information about her or any related families, please email me at joan@leaneagh.com

Susan Josephine Leonard was baptized April 2, 1877 in St. Charles, Missouri at the St. Charles Borremeo Catholic Church. The church record shows that she was born Dec 6, 1876, father is listed as Peter Leonard and the mother is Emily (Iott) Longtin. The sponsor is S. Iott (maybe grandfather Sefroy).

MISSOURI: She is listed on the 1876 City of St. Charles, MO state census as female under the age of 10. Her parents are Peter and Emily Leonard. She is next listed on the 1880 Federal Census for St. Charles, MO as Susan Lenagh, female, age 4, born Missouri.

SOUTH DAKOTA: In 1900, Susie Leanigh is listed on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Census as a servant in the household of Richard Stirk. She says she is born Sep 1879 in Colorado. She is 23 years old. If her mother died between 1881 and 1888, she would have been between 5 and 12 when they came to the Dakota Territory.

In the 1910 Federal Census, we find Susie Leneaugh, single 31 years old, living with her brother Jessie and his wife, Ida (Little Crow) Leneaugh in District 124, Rosebud, Mellette County, SD. Her real age is 1910 - 1876 = 33 1/2.

The Leneaugh family in Mission gave me the information that she married a man named Carlos Gallineaux and that Susie died in a fire. Here is what I have pieced together about Carlos, also spelled Collis or Collice.

1878: His 1917 WWI Civilian Draft Registration card lists his birthdate as Feb 27, 1878 in Mellette County, SD.

1900: Carlos Gallineaux marries Ellen Moran about 1900. I don't have an exact date or even if they are married, but their son John is 9 in 1910. Ellen is the daughter of Lewis/Louis Moran and Susan Pratt.

1910 Census: By now, Carlos is divorced and living with his father David Gallineaux (age 68), Carl (age 34), and David's mother Margaret is 93. Ellen Moran is living back at home with father Lewis Moran. Three Gallineaux children are living next door to Ellen with their Uncle Narisse Moran and Aunt Irene; John (age 9), Alice Susan (age 6), and Hermine (age 2). Again Susie is 31 and living with her brother Jesse Leneaugh.

Note: By the way, Lewis Moran lives next door to Joseph and Jennie Iott, Joseph is half-brother to Susie's mom.

1911: C. H. Gallineaux, age 33 of Winner, SD is married in Tripp county to Susan Leonard, age 23 of Wood, SD, on Jan 3, 1911.

1911: birth of Elizabeth Alice Gallineaux, Mellette Co., SD

1913: birth of Helen Jane Gallineaux, Sept 10, Mellette Co., SD

1915: US Indian Census shows Carlos Gallineaux, born 1878, #358, wife Susan Leaneagh Gallineaux, white-not enrolled, Elizabeth, daughter born 1911 and Helen Jane, daughter born 1913.

1915: birth of Louie Gallineaux, Dec 10, Mellette Co., SD

1915-1917: Susan dies from complications due to a fire in the home.

1917: US Indian Census shows Carlos Gallineaux, no wife listed and three children; Elizabeth, Helen Jane, and Louie born 1915.

1917: C. H. Gallineaux, age 40, widower of Wood, Mellette County, SD is married to Emma Roubideaux on August 20, 1917.

1919: US Indian Census shows Carlos Gallineaux with two daughters, Elizabeth (Alice) and Helen Jane, and wife Emma Roubidaux, born 1896, #1366 1/2. Louie has been adopted by family friends, Edward and Nellie Olsen

1920 Federal Census:

  • Carlos is married to Emma.
  • Ellen Moran has remarried to Joseph Crazybull. Ellen and Joseph have 3 children; Joseph Jr. (age 8), Marianne (age 5) and Harrietta (age 2). There are three stepchildren listed; Jim Gallineaux (age 18), Alice Gallineaux (age 15), and Hermine Gallineaux (age 12).
  • Louie G. Olsen is living with adoptive parent Nellie Olson in Mellette Co., SD with the Greenwood family, Nellie is listed as daughter of Colice Greenwood.

1930 Federal Census: Louie Olsen is living with Edward and Nellie Olsen, both 47 years old, no other children, Mellette Co., SD

1940: Carlos Gallineaux dies on September 16, 1940 in Todd County, SD.

Note: According to an entry at Ancestry.com by Susan Salgy, Ellen Moran died 30 March 1946 in Wood, Todd County, SD. Joseph Crazybull was born Oct 18, 1882 in SD. Emma (Robidaux) Gallineaux dies Dec 15 1955 in Todd Co., SD

Susie is born in Dec of 1876 and dies between 1915 and 1917, she would have been between 39 and 41 years.

Feb 2008/Note: I was recently contacted by the daughter of Louie Gallineaux Olsen, Marilyn and her son Micah. I am happy to report we have an entire new set of cousins. Louie and his wife had seven children. Marilyn identified that Susan Leaneagh Gallineaux is buried in the Catholic Cemetery at St. Francis, SD.

This is what I have put together for the children of Carlos Gallineaux through census

marriage #3

Carlos Gallineaux marries Emma Robidaux August 20, 1917 in Tripp Co., SD.

there are no children from this marriage according to the census of 1919, 1920 or 1930. Elizabeth and Helen Jane Gallineaux live with them until they reach 21 years old.

I have a copy of a document that was written by Frank Aplan, that is a statement taken form Henry Cottier and signed at Rushville, NE on Nov 20, 1963, "Statement of Henry Cottier concerning Elionette Iott". She was the grandmother of Susan and her siblings that brought them from Missouri to northern Nebraska after the death of their parents. He talks about his memories of each of the children of Peter and Emily Leaneagh.

It reads " 6. Susie, known to me but not very well. After she was grown she married a man by the name of Gallineaux who lived near White River, South Dakota. She had several children but I do not know their names. She died many years ago as the result of burns incurred by her when the family home was destroyed by fire."

Again, if anyone has any other information about Susan or any related families, please email me at joan@leaneagh.com
