Jesse Leneaugh (born Peter Justin Lenagh, Jr.)

Jesse Leneaugh was born March 30, 1874 in St. Charles, MO. He was baptized in the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with the name Peter Justin Leonard on May 17, father: Peter, mother: Emily Longtin; sponsers: Joseph Lebeau and Mrs. E. Iott.

He has two sisters, three brothers, and a half-brother that were all born in St. Charles, MO, except George. They are:

  • Mary Ellen/Marie born 1870
  • George Foster born 1872
  • Peter Justin, Jr./Jesse born 1874
  • Susan Josephine born 1876
  • Benard born 1879
  • Francis born 1881

All of the above children, except George, were baptized at the St. Charles Borromeo Church in St. Charles, MO, under the name Leonard. I haven't found George's birth, baptism, or burial spot.

Emilie Iott was married first to a man named Eusebe Longtin/Longtine, they were married Oct 19, 1855. They had two children by the baptism records at the St. Charles Borromeo, St. Charles, MO:

  • Margreth Leonida in 1860, she must have died young.
  • Charles Philip Longtin was born 1862. Philip, as he was know, was reported as deaf and lived with his grandmother Eleonide until her death and then with Marie (Leaneagh) Aplan in the Rushville, NE area.

Philip was a half brother to Jesse and was 12 years older.

The Missouri State Census for the City of St. Charles in 1876, page 85E, lists Jesse as the third child of Peter and Emily Leonard, listing him as: Leonard, Jesse, age: -10, male.

1880 Federal Census for St Charles, MO: Peter, Jr. is 6 years and the third child of Peter, age 43, born Ireland and Emily Lenagh, age 40, born Missouri. - View

Sometime between 1880 and 1883 both his parents died. I can not find anything about either death or burial for both Peter and Emily. I have stories of Emily's mother Eleonide bringing the children to northern Nebraska and southern South Dakota area, and the census puts them there by 1900.

The Leneaugh's of Mission, SD write that "Dad said to tell you that he knows his father's people came from Missouri. He was told that after (Peter) Justin Leneaugh died working on a bridge on the Missouri River, Grandma (Iott) loaded a covered wagon, took her six kids, along with Antoine and Nick (Janis) headed west to the Ogalala Sioux Reservation where Antoine and Nick worked as interepters between the US government and the Sioux tribes. As payment, they were given land, where they built a log cabin house for them. He said that Suzy was a baby (actually 3 were under 7 years old), so Nick and Antoine found a milk cow along the way for milk." He continues by stating that "Grandmother was an Iott, along the way the Iotts changed the spelling to Iyotte. There are Iyottes presently enrolled members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe."

I haven't found a 1900 census for Jesse. His grandmother, younger brother Francis and half brother Philip were listed in Sheridan County, Nebraska in the White Clay District.

The next information I have on Jesse Leneaugh is the 1910 US Federal Census for Rosebud Indian Reservation as part of Mellette County in South Dakota. He is 34 years old and married to Ida, age 26. It is their first marriage and she has 0 children born to her. In the same house are Susie Leneaugh, age 31, single and White Shoulder, listed as a 65 year old widowed Uncle. View here

The household before them is William Little Crow, age 58, and Nellie his wife, age 55, married 35 years. This is Ida's parents. Also listed is Isaac, age 16. Nellie had 6 children and two are still living in 1910 (this being Ida and Isaac).

The 1920 census for Wood, Mellette County, SD has a family group for Jessie Lenagh, his wife Ida, daughters Marie and Amelia, and son Jesse. View here
Here is the transcribtion of the Obituary of Chief Little Crow from the Mellette Pioneer, October 10, 1924.

The information I received in a letter from George R. (Dick) Leneaugh shows the children of Jesse and Ida as:

1. Jesse C. Leneaugh, his wife Margaret, and their son Marlon.

2. Marie Leneaugh, her husband Robert Rogers, and their children: Robert, Rita, Norman, Roberta, Jesse C. and Gilbert.

3. Amelia Leneaugh and her husband Felix Knife, and their children: Karen, Jim, Ann, Ben, Edd, Tony.

4. George Frank Leneaugh, his wife Ruby Larvie, their children: George R, Frank, LaRaine, Robert, Ruth and Michelle.

5. Carl C. Leneaugh, his wife Geneieve Plenty Horse and their children: Sissy, Charlotte, Carl Jr., Ida and Benny.

Jesse Leneaugh died between 1920 and 1930, I don't have an exact date yet. I could not any listing for any Leneaugh in 1930 Mellette County, SD.
